Full Listing and Description of Events:
Global Connections provides New Student Events for incoming International students in January and in August. In August, we do this through our GC Info Table. This table is staffed with GC Volunteers and current International students who distribute GC Welcome Folders & Welcome Bags, take new students to area stores, and just hang out with them. We also offer various activities on evenings throughout a two week period in August before classes begin, including GC’s New Student Welcome Nights, the Amazing BG Race, Mini-Golf & S’mores, Cookout in the Park, Movie Night, etc. In January, we have our Welcome!/Welcome Back! Bowling & Pizza Night for all new and returning International students.
This annual event always takes place in August from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. GC gives away furniture and household items that have been donated to us throughout the year to new International students. Raffle is for new International students only; Free-For-All is for current International students.
The Barn Dance is a fun evening of connections with new and returning International students and their family members—a fun way to kick off the fall semester! This event takes place on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend at the country home of a GC Volunteer. It’s an evening of hayrides, line and square dancing with a professional caller, corn hole & other yard games, a bonfire & s’mores, and great food.
Internationals and Americans come together for a traditional American Thanksgiving Dinner (along with vegetarian dishes) with a raffle of various household items & gift cards as well as wonderful International entertainment. This annual event takes place on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
Over Spring Break, Global Connections will take a group of Internationals for a day trip to Amish Country. We’ll have the opportunity to tour some Amish homes, have lunch with Amish children at their school and tour their classrooms, learn about the history of the Amish, visit some off-the-main-road Amish shops, enjoy buggy rides, and have dinner with an Amish family. Contact Steve at email@example.com to reserve your spot.
Internationals, and especially undergraduate and graduate business students, are invited to a gathering that a local business—Century Marketing Group—hosts and sponsors, in conjunction with Global Connections. Participants will have an opportunity to tour the company, hear from managers and other leaders regarding leadership strategies, and ask questions. Contact Steve at firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve your spot.
From May through July, Global Connections plans several fun field trips for International students and their family members. We always kick off each summer with our annual trip in May to Cedar Point followed by several trips to fun places in Ohio. Besides Cedar Point, we have taken a canal boat ride and did some shopping in Grand Rapids, OH; explored downtown Ann Arbor, MI and the University of Michigan; and went through the African Wildlife Safari followed by some time at Lake Erie in Port Clinton, OH.
Every summer we welcome our Latino friends who will be working on area farms. Our annual Welcome Picnic is in July where we distribute Welcome Bags for the adults and backpacks for the kids, along with enjoying a meal together.
Started and hosted by GC Volunteers Wendy Jenkins & Joan Edwards, the Quilting Class is for anyone wanting to learn how to quilt. Basic sewing skills will be taught, and at the end of the class, you will be able to make your own baby or lap quilt. For more information or to sign up, contact Wendy at email@example.com.
Come learn how to knit! We start with a simple scarf to learn the basics and will provide all you need to get started. No previous experience required. There is no charge for the class, but you may need to purchase some materials. You can join this class at any time! Contact GC Volunteer Wendy Jenkins at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
